Garlic Mustard

Why is it a problem?
Garlic mustard was introduced to New York State by settlers in the mid-1800s. This invasive plant begins to grow in early spring, often before native plants have had a chance to emerge. Like most invasive species, its rapid growth allows it to outcompete native species, often forming dense monocultures that diminish food sources for wildlife. Additionally, garlic mustard releases toxins from its roots, disrupting the mycorrhizal communities that are crucial for soil health.
How to identify?
Garlic mustard is a biennial herb that forms basal rosettes of toothed, kidney-shaped leaves during its first year. As it matures, the plant can grow up to 3 feet tall, producing a single flowering stem with alternate leaves. At the top of the stem, it produces clusters of white flowers with four petals each. When crushed, garlic mustard has a distinct garlic-like aroma.
